Writers Resources: where to submit your work in 2015

We decided to compile a list of prizes where African writers can submit to and their respective submission deadlines for 2015. This post is regularly updated so do come back to check it out. For a more comprehensive list, check our Writers Resources Page

  • 2016 Brunnel University African Poetry Prize

The prize opens for submissions on 1st October 2015. The prize is for ten poems. These poems may, however, have already been published. Only poets who have not yet had a full-length poetry book published are eligible. Poets who have self-published poetry books or had chapbooks and pamphlets published are allowed to submit for this prize. More here

  • V.S. Pritchett Memorial Prize. Deadline for submission is June 22, 2015

This prize awards the best unpublished short story a prize of £1,000. The winning story will be published in Prospect online and in the RSL Review. There will be an opportunity to appear at an RSL event with established short story writers in autumn 2015. Entrants must be citizens of the UK, the Republic of Ireland or Commonwealth countries or have been resident in one of the aforementioned countries for the past three years. More here

  • African Writer’s Residency Awards (AWRA) 2015. Deadline May 29, 2015

The Sylt foundation invites applications from published (not self published) writers of any genre for their two month residency programme.The African Writer´s Residency offers an Award of a two months residency to writers of African literature, whose work engages with contemporary themes related to Africa and the African diaspora.   • Emerging Voices Award. Deadline for submissions is April 30, 2015

This award is is open to published writers of fiction from some selected African countries. Nominations close on April      30th.The works must be published for the first time between 1 January, 2014 and 30 September 2015, in English and a minimum of 20,000 words long. Books may be in print or digital form, or both.Self published works not accepted. More details here

  • Writivism Short Story Prize 2015. Deadline for submissions is 30th April 2015 The prize is for an unpublished short story. Entry is limited to emerging writers based on the continent who are yet to publish a book-length manuscript. All entries must be in English, and 2,500 – 3,500 words long. Only one entry per writer may be submitted for the Writivism Short Story Prize. The story must be original and previously unpublished in any form except on the writer’s personal blog.   • 2015 BN Poetry Prize. Deadline for submissions is 15 May 2015. The BN Poetry Award was initially set-up to provide a platform for women poets in Uganda. In 2013, it extended its remit to include all African poets living anywhere in the world, male and female – writers either born on the continent, citizens of an African country or with either one or both parents that are African citizens. To enter, writers need to submit between 1 and 3 unpublished and original poems in English with a maximum combine length of 40 lines. Only writers who will not have published (or self-published) a full-length collection of poetry by May 2015 are eligible to enter. Prize money is $1000. Details here
  • Granta Magazine. Deadline for submissions is 1st April 2015 Granta is a literary magazine that accepts submissions that are unpublished and original. However, original translations of work previously appeared in another language is permissible. There are no restrictions on word count. Details here
  • Imagine Africa 500 Anthology. Deadline for submissions is March 15 The Story Club Malawi, in partnership with Malawian publisher Panafrica Publishers Ltd., has announced an open submission for its upcoming anthology IMAGINE AFRICA 500. The anthology will collect short stories set in Africa in 2515. The story can be on theme about Africa. The 10 best short submitted works will be published in the anthology. Submissions may be mailed to shadai79@yahoo.com Stories must be written in English, original and unpublished. Stories must be between 3000 and 3500 words in length, and authors must also submit a short biography (maximum 300 words)of themselves. More Details here
